How much time have you got left here on Earth? Assuming you’ll live 80 years, that’s 80 x 365 = 29200 days. If you count only adult life, that leaves you with only (80-18) x 365 = 22630 mornings to enjoy in your life. This is a reminder that our lives are short, and time is the only resource which can’t be bought, extended, or taken back. I took the motivation for these calculations from an article titled 25,000 morning by James Clear. I took a more conservative approach assuming a mean age of 80 and not 86 years.
I’ve also seen the following video by Zefrank where our lifespan is illustrated by Jellybeans. Each of the 28,835 Jellybeans represents one day in your life, give or take – but once sleeping, work, busy work, commuting, chores, etc are taken into account, you really are left with very little time.
Both that article and that video motivated me to create something that will constantly remind me of this urgency. Too often on the computer do I get lost either on Facebook or Reddit, and let the hours fly by. To remind me of this urgency, I created a very simple Mac OS application that stays in your top application bar and keeps counting down either in seconds (to highlight the countdown of time), or in days, to just gently remind you they are not infinite, but rather a small finite integer.
It works as follows. Simply input your date of birth, and, assuming a life of 80 years, you will get either a second or day countdown.
If you think you would like to try it out, please DOWNLOAD and let me know what you think. The App is Mac OS only. If it does not work as expected, please let me know – this is my first time making a Mac OS app, and while it works for me, I might have missed something anyways.
